DENVER—CollabGPS founder Ted Buras is gearing up to launch Joystiq, a new location-based hookup, chat and dating app created primarily for gay men, with trans men welcome, a rep said.
The app is slated to launch this fall on the App Store and Google Play.
Built for “however users choose to connect,” Joystiq will offer location-based discovery, private chat, photos and private albums alongside group chat, local event listings with ticket-purchasing and tools that let users host their own private events.
“The goal is to bring hookups, conversation and real-world community into one platform without losing sight of the user experience,” the rep added.
Buras enters the project after launching CollabGPS, his networking platform for content creators, and says Joystiq grew from “a desire to offer something less driven by constant upsells and corporate decision-making.”
“I want to prove that a community-first platform can succeed. Instead of basing every decision on the shareholders, I want to base it on you, the user and the greater needs of the LGBTQ community,” Buras said.
Profits generated by the platform will go to support LGBTQ nonprofits, beginning with The Colorful Colfax Project and the Gays With Kids Academy.
Joystiq will get an early public introduction at Atlanta Pride, from October 10-11, at Atlanta’s Piedmont Park, where Buras will host a tent and give attendees hands-on demonstrations of the app on devices at the booth ahead of the fall release.
