FUKUOKA, Japan—Japan-based company Fidem has rolled out HandSome, a new adult content distribution platform built on blockchain technology that went live on October 14, in open beta phase.
HandSome is the brainchild of Ami Kasai, a former Japanese adult video (JAV) actress-turned-computer programmer, along with three other legendary JAV performers: Genji Moribayashi, Riku Mukai and Ai Uehara, who have over 5,000 JAV titles combined.
“Harnessing immutability and transparency of blockchain, HandSome gives creators full control of their rights to content and fair compensation, while opening doors for global (non-Japanese) creators to collaborate with Japanese creators and distribute their content in a legally compliant manner,” a platform rep said.
The JAV market is estimated to be ¥110 billion yen (approximately $700 million USD) with a division between the commercial and Doujin (amateur creators) segments. In recent years, according to the Fidem rep, the Doujin segment revenue surpassed that of the commercial segment, “awakening creators to their market power.”
“However, the Doujin segment is struggling because of credit card processing issues and heightened regulatory scrutiny. HandSome emerges as a desperately needed alternative,” the rep added.
Kasai, founder and CEO of Fidem, has been a most vocal advocate for AV performers’ rights in the country where stigma against the profession still exists and women, in general, “are not seen as having a say in her own career path.”
In 2016, Kasai was arrested for having an uncensored work distributed without her consent or knowledge (no charges were filed). The founding of HandSome, she says, is the culmination of her years of advocacy.
“HandSome is an infrastructure created by and for adult creators. Through a system that streamlines consent, contract management, sales transactions and profit sharing, we ensure that creators receive fair compensation. We also have implemented a right-to-be-forgotten process that simplifies content takedown on HandSome, allowing creators to take control of how their works can be consumed according to life stages of their career. Moreover, by opening channels for safe and secure distribution overseas, we are creating a platform that enables Japanese creators to effectively market themselves and manage their brand globally,” Kasai said.
HandSome’s star-studded booth at Taiwan Adult Expo in April, joined by Amber Kawaii, got the attention of Taiwanese fans, generating hundreds of early-bird signups.
“HandSome’s global journey has just begun,” the rep said. At the launch, the site access is limited to IP addresses originated within Japan, while the global access will be rolled out with crypto/stablecoin payment options in later phases.
Fidem, the operating company of HandSome, also announced that it is actively seeking collaborators among industry peers to shape the future of the adult industry in Asia and other markets.
